The decoration on this orb jar is informed by my love of derelict and abandoned houses. Imagine walking into such a building, and seeing layers and layers of peeling and chipped paint and wallpaper. Perhaps there's even some plaster missing and you can see the lath or brick or stone behind the wall. Over there by the fireplace you see decades of smoke stains darkening the wall above. All of this hints at the history and the humanity that took place in those spaces.
 
I translate these layered histories onto ceramic orb jars whose rounded forms reference both domestic storage vessels and funerary urns. These vessels become containers not only of physical space but of memory itself. They ask what remains after a life, a family, or a community has passed, and how objects continue to bear witness when the people who shaped them are no longer present.
 
The form of the orb jar is inspired by the historical Korean Moon Jar. I find the shape incredibly dynamic and compelling, particularly for this style of decoration.
